The Cinnamon Elephant Project

The Cinnamon Elephant Project by Cinnamon Hotels Management Ltd

Asian elephants are the continent's largest terrestrial mammals. Of the subspecies of Asian elephants, the Sri Lankan is physically the largest, and also the darkest in colour. Considered to be among the top 10 greatest natural animal spectacles in the world, the Elephant Gathering is the largest wild gathering of the Asian elephant, occurring annually within the safety of the protected Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka.

With two properties of the Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts chain located a ten-minute drive away from Ground Zero of this natural phenomenon, Cinnamon has proactively promoted responsible ecotourism around the gathering through informative and immersive tourist experiences, while at the same time ensuring the conservation of the endangered Asian elephant.

With the ground-breaking Cinnamon Elephant Project, Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts has increased their year-on-year tourist numbers in the region with an average 7.8%, and has created a means of gathering baseline data of the elephant herds, addressing the pressing challenge of the lack of scientific data required by wildlife and government authorities to support the conservation of the elephant, and sustain natural wildlife and habitat.
